one hand in my pocket…

by Toni

Punching through radio programs, picking up songs, random associations, which end up telling a story.

#1

Mustang Sally  (ZZ Top)
She’s Got A Way (Billy Joel)
I’m Gonna Miss Her  (Brad Paisley)

#2

Before He Cheats  (Carrie Underwood)
I Can’t Make You Love Me  (Bonnie Rait)
Johnny Be Good (Chuck Berry)

#3

I Stay Away  (Alice in Chains)
Alone  (Alice in Chains)
All She Wants To Do Is Dance  (Don Henley)

#4

How Do You Tell Someone  (Cowboy Mouth)
What Might Have Been  (Diamond Rio)
So Hard  (Dixie Chicks)

#5

One Hand In My Pocket  (Alanis Morrisette)
Don’t Make Me (Blake Shelton)
Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy  (Big & Rich)

Now, I thought about making this all "Trust Your Reader" or "How Random Associations Spark Ideas" or even "Brevity Works" and then I realized you all knew me well enough not to be fooled by any of that. This is totally "My Brains Have Melted, SEND HELP" — so let’s just pretend I said something smart up there and now you get to be smart, too. Your turn.

Congrats go out to Brett Battles for his super cool starred review in Library Journal for THE DECEIVED this week and J.D. (Dusty) Rhoades for the fantastic Publisher’s Weekly rave review of BREAKING COVER. Way to go, guys!

Thanks for the shout out, Toni. I read the new Bobbie Faye book at the beach, and it’s fantastic!

Toni, even with Brain Melt, you come up with gems!

Mine is melted too – our 25-year old mare had a choke episode last night and I was in the barn at 2 a.m. with the vet putting a tube through her nose all the way to the stomach pumping warm water to get rid of the blockage.

Thank god it was quickly resolved and today I have to soak everything she eats and make sure she stays clear.

Novel? What novel? It’s that kind of weekend here.

You’ve perked me up – thank you!

Aw, Brett, you definitely deserve to enjoy the glow! (and thanks)

Louise! I’m cracking up. That’s perfect.

And billie, holy yikes… that sounds like such a rough night for all of you. So glad it turned out okay and that she’s doing better. Sending good wishes for her continued improvement. (Glad to make you smile!)

Toni,This is too weird. I wrote a post about using songs to unblock (sorry, Billie) our creativity but it didn’t sound like me, so I scrapped it for something else.

. . . and here you do this.

I don’t have the radio on right now, but here are a few lines that seem to be top of mind:

Soft and tan and young and lovelyYou say, “Yes.” I say . . .Please let me be your third world country.

Strangely this is much more fun than doing the work I’m meant to…and congratulations to JD, that is a good review.
